Hi, I’m Carylyne.
Here’s a little about how I came to be.
Once upon a time…
I was born in balmy Singapore. As an only child, I spent most of my time reading all kinds of things, learning to make cute little websites with animated cursors, and dabbling in robotics.
It was an escape from a turbulent childhood with a psychopathic father who wanted to control — and eventually tried to murder — my mom and I.
But we did not succumb.
When I was 15, we left and decided to make it on our own. I started interning at various companies, and learned to write speeches for my principal and helmed the small environmental club in school. In my heart, all I always wanted is to make the world better in my own small ways — despite any trying circumstances.
I stumbled into the world of social entrepreneurship, and then eventually into tech startups. I loved (and still love!) the camaraderie, the promise, and the autonomy of building cool things with great people. Despite having zero privilege, and no money to speak of, there was still a chance — by applying myself thoroughly — that I could make a bigger impact than I may have thought possible.
So I pursued this dream all around the world. Today, I am very lucky to have worked with teams of wonderful, wonderful people to develop solutions across various industries, and been a part of several exits.
My takeaway from everything is this:
All you need is the right mindset, the openness to dream, the willingness to persevere, the ability to pursue what you want really hard, the readiness to give, the discipline to stick to good habits, and the enthusiasm to keep learning.
Then things will happen for you.
I am where I am because along the way, people took a chance on an underdog like me. And now, I want to help those with the same spirit, and keep building and learning alongside them.
Thanks for reading my story. I would love to join you on your own journey, and keep making the world better, together.

Fun things I do like it’s work (um, hobbies)
Tea Mastery
I usually designate a tea type for each year, and attempt to drink 80-100 of that tea type in a year. I have a tea master’s certification and continue to attend tea classes to hone my tea knowledge and skills (including, among other things, how to pour water from a kettle so the tea leaves swirl in a very specific way).
Guqin-playing
I admit that I first bought a guqin as mere decoration for my tea room. After a while, I felt pretty bad about not being able to play it, ha! So I started taking lessons, and I’m learning to play it now. I’m still not great, but it's nice to hold on to the feeling of being a beginner. I own a luoxia guqin made by master Ma Weiheng himself.
Meditation
I practice Transcendental Meditation, although any form of meditation has great benefits. I started years ago, and it’s been a wonderful part of my routine since. I have a meditation tracker that I still check off, to make sure that I continue to do it daily. This is why I say my hobbies are all like work, I guess, lol!
Reading
I have a reading routine, and make sure I get in at least two chapters a day. I try to approach topics that widen my perspectives or change my mind. Each quarter, I have a theme I’m trying to learn, and pick books in that area. I also try to read Chinese books once in a while, so I can improve my grasp of the language!
Escape rooms / puzzles
I’ve attempted close to 100 escape rooms around the world, and still find the concept exciting. There’s something fun about being immersed in a new environment and experience, and torturing your brain a bit. When we visit a venue, I try to do about 4-5 games back to back, so I can get a sense of the game master’s point of view.
Travel
I’m usually traveling about half the year (if not more). It’s fun to hang out for a time at different places around the world, and get to know new people and soak in new ideas. With all that, I’ve gotten pretty good at managing and scaling teams remotely, so I have a schedule and routine worked out to juggle everything.
